About Us

Our Story

Generate Theatre Arts exists to deliver opportunities to children which help facilitate personal, social and academic development by teaching through drama and about drama. Our small friendly team of experts uses performing arts techniques and exercises to put children at the centre of the story, as we engage visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learners in one stimulating environment. Since launching in 2012, the Generate team has worked with more than 5,000 students in schools across Stockport and Greater Manchester with more than 700 passing through our after school programme since 2015.

Our Director

Since completing his degree in Contemporary Theatre and Performance in 2013, Chris Betton has produced work in venues such as London's O2 Arena, Manchester's Lowry Theatre and in mainland Europe. He has also worked on popular programmes such as Hollyoaks and Grange Hill. Since leaving Poynton Town Council (as the Child Protection and Safeguarding Officer) he has taken Generate from a handful of children performing in a church hall, to hundreds in schools across the region performing at major theatres, as he oversees the progress and development of the entire team and register. Working with children and young people has always been Chris's sole professional ambition, and when he isn't running workshops or planning productions, he works in the SEN department at Werneth School, Stockport.

How It Works

How Children Sign Up

After a visit to your school during an assembly to inform the pupils of the opportunity, those children who wish to take part will give a letter to their families with instructions for how to sign up through this website. Upon completion of registration, your admin team will receive a copy of the register.

The Weekly Activity

The school year is broken into two projects: September - February, and February - July. Participating children will meet in the school hall each week after school. Sessions last an hour or ninety minutes, and involve games and exercises designed to increase confidence and skill. The first three weeks of each project are interactive workshops which explore educational themes from the the production the children are making.

The Performances

Each project will culminate in a performance of a famous musical in a professional venue for an audience of family and friends. February's performance will feature only children from your school for a smaller audience; July's performance will bring together several participating schools to perform at for an audience of 500+.

The Qualification

Workshops adhere to a syllabus set by the Victoria College of Music and Drama, who will send an examiner to sit in the audience at the February productions. Each member of the cast will have the opportunity to earn a qualification for taking part according to the college's criteria.

Free to Your School

There is no cost involved for participating schools, as families pay a nominal fee of £4 per hour with a 10% siblings' discount. Schools can, by request, use the Generate Theatre Arts After School Drama Club as a Pupil Premium opportunity if they wish.

According to Our Schools

The Generate experience is fantastic.

The club has been running in school for over two years now and is well organised and very conscientious about making sure the after school sessions are run on time. The club is very successful with many repeat members.
